Each month we run a social club - a chance to meet and make friends while enjoying an evening of drinks, cake, and book chat. We pick the book and, whether you love it, hate it, or something in-between, there's always loads of great conversation and a lot of laughs!
For October we're looking spooky season straight in the eyes and reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle by the most formidable writer of gothic horror, Shirley Jackson. Often held up as Jackson's most skillfully crafted novel, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, which is a testament to Jackson’s literary prowess. It is a study in psychologically realistic characters who make morally grey decisions, while also being a masterclass in unreliable narration and a feminist critique on the constraints of society. Come for the creeping horror, stay for the craft.
Eighteen-year-old Merricat may, or may not be, a mass murderer. Six years ago everyone in the Blackwood family was poisoned by sugar laced with arsenic – everyone, that is, apart from Merricat and her elder sister Constance. They live in peaceful, ordered isolation, away from prying eyes in the nearby village, until one day boorish cousin Charles arrives with designs on their father’s fortune. Whether by practical or magical means, Merricat will do whatever is necessary to protect their home.
