Persephone Books reprints neglected fiction and non-fiction, mostly by women writers and mostly dating from the mid-twentieth century. All of their 152 titles are intelligent, thought-provoking and beautifully written. Francesca Beauman, daughter of founder Nicola and now the M.D, joins us to talk about the work that they do to raise up women’s voices - looking particularly at their newest release, Hop, Step and Jump by Winifred Watson. Pre-order your copy of the book here.
Winifred Watson lived in Newcastle her entire life and is also the author of Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Persephone’s best-selling title that later became a film starring Amy Adams and Frances McDormand. As with many of Persephone's titles, Hop, Step and Jump is a deceptive book - easy reading but with some hard-hitting themes.
